DSO Forsyth Barr Concert: Celebrating Matariki – Whakanuia Matariki
Saturday 22 July, 5.00pm – 7.00pm

‘Celebrating Matariki – Whakanuia Matariki’ reflects the universal fascination with stars and planets, including the phenomenon of Matariki which signals the Māori New Year, a time for reflection, renewal and celebration in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The concert opens with four New Zealand compositions. A highlight will be the world première of Dame Gillian Whitehead’s ‘Ngā Whetū o Matariki – Stars of Matariki’, commissioned by the DSO especially for this concert, and taonga pūoro soloist Ariana Tikao. Ariana Tikao will also perform on taonga pūoro in a second work, Manaaki which she co-composed with Phil Brownlee
Two other NZ compositions share the theme of night and light: Larry Pruden’s ‘Night Song’, and Brigid Bisley’s ‘Glimmer of Blue’. The concert finishes with a masterwork by Mozart, his ‘Jupiter’ symphony which is said to reflect qualities of Jupiter who was the Roman god of the sky and king of the gods.
Adults $52, Concessions $46, Students and children $15
