Matariki Ahuka Nui

In partnership with Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, the Dunedin City Council and Tūhura Otago Museum invite Ōtepoti whānui to gather to celebrate the Māori New Year and to welcome Aotearoa’s newest public holiday.

Begin on the Museum Reserve with karakia to mark the return of Puaka and Matariki to the dawn sky and to whakamaumahara or remember our dear departed, through large-scale projections of the stars and changing seasons alongside photos of loved ones who have passed away in the past year.  Then come inside for kōrero and waiata and kai-o-te-ata, a free community breakfast.

Dress for the weather!  Nau mai, haere mai – everyone is welcome.

Otago Museum Reserve; Tuhura Otago Museum Café, 419 Great King Street Ōtepoti Raki North Dunedin

Friday 24 June, 7‒9.30am. FREE

Tūhura Taster at the Golden Centre

Puaka and Matariki are rising – have you seen them? Come by Otago Museum’s pop-up at the Golden Centre to learn how to find them, what they mean for us here on Earth, and what they can tell us about the life cycles of stars.

This event is presented by the New Zealand International Science Festival.
